On February 11, 1982, Howard Hughes's gigantic Spruce Goose, a 210-foot aircraft that only flew once, was moved into a large aluminum dome next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Hundreds watched from the Queen Mary as the $25 million plane completed its 4.5-mile journey by barge. Designed as a troop transport during World War II, the Spruce Goose made a single one-mile flight in 1947. It will now be the centerpiece of a Wrather Corp. exhibit recreating its intended purpose.
