Rembrandtplein, where Bakkerstraat begins, as it looked in the 19th century, compared to its current state. Once Amsterdam's Botermarkt (Butter Market) from 1669, it was renamed Rembrandtplein in 1876 to honor the artist. After WWII, it became a nightlife hub with cafes, shops, and hotels, and boasts Europe's largest LCD screen. Renovated in 2009, with greenery removed and Rembrandt's statue moved to the center, the square now hosts a modern art market every Sunday during warmer months.
