
Pasadena marked its 100th anniversary on June 19, 1986, with a grand celebration featuring the release of 28,000 balloons at City Hall, which was adorned with flags and banners. A time capsule containing a sample of 1986 smog was sealed to be opened in 2086. Church bells rang throughout the city as Mayor John Crowley praised Pasadena's appearance. A massive group photo was taken as a jazz band played.
