Haarlemmerpoort, 1954, 1954

Netherlands
Amsterdam, North Holland
haarlemmerpoort-1954

Haarlemmerpoort. Officially opened November 27, 1840, the day before King Willem II's inauguration, these gates served as his ceremonial entrance into the city, earning them the alternate name Willemspoort, visible on the inner inscription. By then, the gate had lost its defensive purpose and primarily functioned as a toll gate.
