Leidseplein with Dome Church, 1925, 1925

Amsterdam, North Holland

Leidseplein, circa 1925, with the Koepelkerk in the background. The Protestant Koepelkerk church in the "Leiden Woods" area, built in 1884, was demolished in 1972. Declining church attendance in the 1960s, coupled with financial difficulties in maintaining the buildings, led to the closure of many churches. Consequently, Amsterdam lost some beautiful church buildings. The Mariot Hotel has occupied the Koepelkerk site since 1975.
