Leidseplein, not quite a square yet, is entered between buildings on the left. The Stadsschouwburg (City Theatre) is visible in the background beyond the tram. Leidseplein ("Leiden Square"), along with Dam Square and Rembrandtplein, is one of Amsterdam's most famous squares, known for its entertainment and nightlife. Located southwest of the city center, it takes its name from the Leidsepoort, a former city gate demolished in 1862, which stood along the road to Leiden.
