The 12th-15th century fortress walls enclose Baku's Old City or Inner City, also known as Icheri Sheher. The photo shows the walls without merlons, which would be restored later in the 19th century. This restoration, along with publications in architectural journals, would spark renewed interest in the architecture, similar to the Nikolo-Perevinsky Monastery walls in Moscow.
