The Odessa Yacht Club was founded in 1897. Its charter was signed by Vice-Admiral P. Tyrtov on May 29th, and the official flag-raising ceremony took place on September 14th of the same year, marking the club's founding date. Named the "Ekaterininsky" (Catherine's) Yacht Club to commemorate the centenary of Empress Catherine II's death (observed in 1896, when the charter was being drafted), the club acknowledged her role in the development of the Novorossiysk region and Odessa.
