In 1889, millionaire Collis P. Huntington bought six adjacent lots at Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York City for his wife, Arabella. He initially hired George B. Post to design a grand home to showcase his extensive antique collection, a savvy move given the neighborhood's burgeoning prestige with mansions like those of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and others nearby. After initially declining due to the project's scale, Post was eventually re-hired and completed the mansion in 1891.
