or Saladin's Fortress - a fortress in Cairo, one of the attractions of the capital of Egypt. Built, presumably, in 1176-1183. Salah ad-Din intended to turn the Cairo Citadel into a kind of city within a city, however, he failed. According to the plan, powerful walls were to go from the Citadel to the Nile, enveloping the city on both sides. The successor of Salah ad-Din, his nephew Sultan al-Kamil, first moved the official residence of the head of state to the citadel. In 1176, construction began on the citadel of Cairo - the most impregnable a medieval fortress that lives up to its name (Cairo means “victorious” in Arabic). The effectiveness of the citadel's location is evidenced by the fact that it remained the heart of the Egyptian government until the end of the 19th century.
