Drawbridge near the village of Suikki, 1941
On June 27, 1941, near the village of Suikki, a 300-meter section of the old Saimaa Canal's route, northeast of the current canal, was dry. Water had been drained through a pipe under the modern canal into the Soskuanjoki River, southwest of the canal. This section previously held a retractable bridge on a narrowed, granite-lined portion of the canal. The bridge retracted to the northeast bank. By 2009, the bridge structure was gone, but the granite embankments, abutments, and the roller and gear retraction mechanism remained. The mechanism's date indicated the bridge's construction in 1851.
