These Games were the first in the history of the USSR. Previously, the Russian Empire team competed at the Olympics, the last time 40 years ago, in 1912. A mandatory requirement from the USSR was that Soviet athletes live separately from athletes from capitalist countries (there was even a proposal that our athletes come to Helsinki from Leningrad every day).
